afro psych rock
Blending the traditions of Mali and American Rock/Funk with a retro feel, OG represents a world of powerful cross-cultural experience. OG’s vibrant sound is spearheaded by the dynamic Mariam Diakite, whose raw, hypnotic vocals deliver heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics in the highly symbolic Bambara language. While paying homage to Malian musical traditions, this fierce new sound thrives with heavy swinging rhythms, a funky fresh brass section, and cosmic guitar licks. OG offers a kaleidoscope of magical sound deeply rooted in the past while boldly blazing towards the genre-bending future.

ALBUM TITLE / PROSPECTIVE RELEASE DATE
“Dakan”, meaning “Destiny” in the Bambara language of Mali, Fall 2024.
ALBUM THEME
Several of the songs center the theme of Destiny. As Mariam says in the title track, “Dakan (Destiny)”, “Destiny is God’s ultimate truth for us and we can’t fake it. When you see someone walking their path, you know it. In a similar vein, whatever our destiny is whether it’s to be a musician, poet or investment banker, we can only hide from it at our own peril.
AESTHETIC VISION
The album bridges a heavy analog tape aesthetic with a fat, horn driven sound. Think warm saturated mid-ranges and thumping low-end. The instruments sound warm, vibrant and overtone-y, with tinges of psychedelia tastefully woven throughout. Aesthetic Inspiration:

“It’s tempting to make comparisons with other Malian singers like Fatoumata Diawara or that other well-known Mariam- Mariam Doumbia of Amadou & Mariam— but Orchestra Gold’s sound is grittier. Their music is almost closer to Swedish experimentalists Goat or to Texan pyshc-funksters Khruangbin (themselves recent collaborators with another great Malian, Vieux Farka Toure). The album is called Medicine because the band hopes to spread “healing and community through the unofficial gift of music’. As far as I can tell, Orchestra Gold’s hypnotic groove has no unwanted side effects.”
