“...grounded in tradition and moving the conversation of African diasporic music forward. The album {Medicine} implores the listener to join in and get lost in the magic.”
This evening celebrates the release of OG’s long-awaited album, “Medicine.” The theme of this record is the medicinal role of music in the lives of the members of OG. This evening offers a punctuation mark to that expression. For this special occasion, we bring together a talented and diverse set of collaborators in the arts to give you a dose of the medicine that we all need.
OG is simultaneously staging a fundraising effort to help offset the costs of travelling to Austin for SXSW this March! Also, we’ve got some very special gifts we’ll be auctioning off.

•ORCHESTRA GOLD: PSYCHEDELIC AFRICAN ROCK
Orchestra Gold (OG) celebrates the musical crossroads between Mali and the US. It’s where rowdy, psychedelic rock meets the analog tape sounds of W. Africa. Leading the train is electric frontwoman Mariam Diakite. The raucous sound of her vocals transport you to a street ceremony on a sticky Sunday in Bamako. Their music draws deeply upon the canon of Malian tradition. But, it goes beyond that, forging a path into American rock and psychedelia, Afrobeat and Funk. OG is for the lovers of fat horns, heavy swinging rhythm sections, and spaced-out psychedelic guitar lines. 🌊
“Mali’s musical heritage is vast…and Mariam’s voice channels that history”
Please Note:
*Proof of vaccination + ID verification required for entry
*As part of our studio audience, please expect to stay for the full duration of the performance and conversation
“the dynamo out front is Diakité, who has spent her life soaking up Malian traditions”
Oakland-based African psychedelic rock ensemble Orchestra Gold has released its new single titled ‘Koniya.’
The single will appear in their upcoming third studio album “Medicine” scheduled for release January 20, 2023.
Mariam Diakite says about ‘Koniya’: “The lyrics of this song are meant for everybody: all of Humanity. Jealousy is of no benefit.
“What do I mean by Jealousy? For example, if I see you have lots of money and I get upset. That is the type of Jealousy I speak of.
“To take another example, say someone wants to buy me a house. They tell this to their friend, and that friend tries to talk them out of it, saying ‘no why do you want to buy Mariam a house, she has plenty of money!’ This is another destructive element of Jealousy: it’s to try and block someone else from finding their happiness. It’s when we don’t have another’s best interest at heart.
“Even in marriage, friendships, and work relationships, there can be jealousy. To take the point home, us musicians can be super jealous of each other’s abilities!
“The song says there is no benefit to jealousy of this type. It’s not good for us, and it’s not good for others. We can do better.”
